Receptionist / kiosk mode is great for your clinic locations that run light on admin staff — allowing patients to check themselves in on arrival, without any help.
But what about walk-ins looking to book? Or someone wanting to leave a message? Well, new in v6.3.0 of the iPad app, you can enable this!
The button
There's a new button in receptionist / kiosk mode, if you enable it. Here's what it looks like:
What the button does
Tapping the button will open any URL (that you configure through the Portal) in a pop up window inside the iPad app! In the example below, I've configured this button to open the URL of a page I made specifically for this job (https://finger-ink.com/kiosk-actions). This page contains some large buttons for booking an appointment, a FAQs page and a contact us page:
☝️It's important that it goes to a URL that you control. You don't want a bad actor being able to do a bait-and-switch on your URL to get nefarious content displaying on your iPad receptionist in your clinic!
The iPad user can then use these buttons to perform the various actions, such as online booking:
☝️The back and close buttons are added on top of any web page displayed. They function as you'd expect, except for the close button. That will automatically trigger after 25 seconds of inactivity — i.e. no touches, taps, scrolls or keyboard entry.
There's also a QR code
You may have noticed the QR code on the button in the screenshot above. Here's a closer look:
If the iPad user knows about QR codes, they might try scan this (feel free to try it yourself!). If they do, it will open up that same configured URL (i.e. https://finger-ink.com/kiosk-actions from the previous example) on their phone / mobile device.
In this way they can perform an additional action (such as book online) without needing to use the iPad at all.
How to enable the button
Now that you know all about how the button works, here's how you enable it. Visit the iPads page within the Portal, and go to the Default Settings tab. Once there, enter the additional actions URL, then save:
☝️You'll need to be running at least v6.3.0 of the iPad app for this setting to get picked up.
Once you've added a URL and saved, the new "I'm not here to check in" button will appear on the iPad app. You don't even need to restart the app — the main receptionist / kiosk mode screen will refresh once it's digested the new setting.
Different buttons for different iPads
Following along from our recent change to allow the receptionist / kiosk mode logo to be set on a per-iPad basis, the actions URL can also be set on a per iPad basis.
Visit the main iPads list, then click on one of the names of the iPads. Then, scroll to the bottom, and you'll see the receptionist / kiosk mode actions URL setting:
Next Steps
Now that you've got these other actions sorted, it's time to test receptionist / kiosk mode.
