Generating a PracSuite API key

Learn how to generate an API key within PracSuite, to connect Finger-Ink to your PracSuite account.

Written by Brendan Kilfoil

API stands for "Application Programming Interface". It's what lets Finger-Ink talk to PracSuite. There are two parts to this talking:

  1. Identification and authentication

  2. The chatter itself — allowing us to do things like get your appointments and check patients in

The API key

Before we can get to the chatter itself, we need to identify & authenticate your account. This step requires an API key. This key is like a password that you can generate from your PracSuite account, specifically for this type of access.

Generating an API key

To generate an API key, you'll need to sign into your PracSuite account, then navigate to the Settings overview page, then click on API under Integrations:

Once you're there, add a new API key by first putting the page into edit mode, enable API integrations, then save. After that click the add button to add a new API key.

Configuring the key

Finger-Ink only needs a limited set of permissions within your PracSuite account. And it's always best to restrict any integration to only those permissions necessary — to avoid unnecessary risk.

Here's how you should configure the key so that it works with Finger-Ink:

Click save when you're done and you'll be shown the API key. You must copy it at this stage.

☝️ Your API key will only be shown once. You must copy it and put it directly into Finger-Ink, or store it in a safe place (like 1Password). Failure to do so means you'll have to do all the same steps above.

Once you've got that key, just paste it into the API key box in the Finger-Ink start trial page, fill out the rest of the details, and you're done!
